In August of 2002 Atheros Communication introduced
(http://www.atheros.com/pt/ar5001X.html)
The AR5001X Combo WLAN Solution supports three generations of WAN standards:
IEEE 802.11a, the 802.11g draft standard and the 802.11b legacy standard
AR5001X Solution contains three CMOS low-power chips:
- AR5111 5-GHz Radio-on-a-Chip (RoC)
- AR5211 Multiprotocol MAC/baseband processor
- AR2111 2.4-GHz Radio-on-a-Chip (RoC)
AR5001X Combo Solution relies on the "Atheros second-generation 802.11a technology", which
includes the second-generation implementation of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) modulation
scheme. This OFDM modulation scheme, used for both 802.11a and also present in the draft 802.11g
standards, yields the performance level for their wireless networking.
At high data rates OFDM mitigates multipath intersymbol interference by simultaneously transmitting multiple
subcarriers on orthogonal frequency channels. Each subcarrier is modulated at a low symbol rate. OFDM improves range and reliability,
Since this
approach is tolerant of many common channel impairments, it
supports multiple high-bandwidth tasks in real time.
Security issues are mitigated by the use of the
Advanced Encryption Standard
(AES).
Further information the AR5001X solution is available in pdf format at:

The chipset can be found "in use" in the Winstrom Ne Web
